Grace Brewer is an adorable little girl with a mitochondrial complex IV deficiency which causes her to have very low muscle tone and very low energy levels.  She is unable to crawl, walk, stand, or sit unsupported for very long.

Gracie's severe reflux and swallowing difficulties required that she have a Nissen procedure and a G-tube, so she no longer eats food by mouth.  Because of  the low muscle tone in her throat, she still chokes and aspirates on her own saliva which requires constant vigilence.  Gracie also has epilepsy and all of these problems have left her developmentally delayed.

Through it all Gracie is THE happiest little girl with a fantastic personality!  She is full of smiles and laughter, and her big brother, Ryan, can make her belly laugh by just smiling back at her.  She loves to babble, and though she cannot yet say any words she tries to  carry on a conversation with you.  She loves to watch Dora the Explorer and Wonder Pets on Noggin and Chickiepoo & Fluff makes her giggle.

Gracie receives physical, occupational, and speech therapies three times per week and is blessed to have such wonderful therapists who are dedicated and determined to teach her to walk and talk!  Her daily caregiver is devoted to giving Gracie the special attention she needs.  We believe there are many exciting developments ahead for this precious little girl!

To honor Grace and her continuing battle, the Brewer family of Rockwall, Texas established the Grace Brewer Research Fund. Through the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF), money donated to this fund goes to research in Grace’s name.

The
UMDF was formed by families affected by mitochondrial disease. Like the Brewer family, the UMDF founders wanted to help others affected by the disorder. The Foundation provides support to families and funds research into mitochondrial disease.

Mitochondria produce more than
90
percent of the body’s energy. When these tiny parts of the cell can’t do their job, the body doesn’t get the energy it needs, resulting in a wide range of debilitating and sometimes fatal symptoms. Up to one in 2,000 children born each year will develop a mitochondrial disease by age 10. Most of these affected children will not survive beyond their teenage years.

Through research, the medical world
one day will have the resources to help children like Grace win the battle against mitochondrial disease. Until then, please help the Brewer family and the UMDF "redefine hope" for everyone affected by mitochondrial disease by donating to the Grace Brewer Research Fund.
